Larry Fink Exhibit
Main Photograph: Center
Technical Aspects:
Lighting: The lighting is coming from in front of the subject, and casts strong shadows on the subjects face.
Contrast: The mans tux, hair, and the background is very dark, meanwhile the subjects skin, and the highlights of the chandelier are the lightest shades in the photograph.
Exposure: The photo is correctly exposed, it just has a more extreme contrast.
Focus: The photograph is in focus.
Depth of Field: Larry Fink manipulates the camera's depth of field in order to make the subject in focus, and not the background.
Composition:
POV: The point of view seems to be from someone else that was in the room/ an onlooker.
Balance: The photo is radially balanced, as the photo brings your attention to the subject, and slowly draws is outwards.
Rule of Thirds: The photo does not meet the rule of thirds.
Focal Point: The focus of the image is the girl's face.
Orientation: The photo is square-cut.
Depth:
Foreground- Couple dancing
Middleground- Chandelier
Background- Wall
Detail: There is pattern in the crown-molding on the wall. There is texture found in the mans hair. The negative space is the area surrounding the girls face (positive space).
Movement: Your eye is automatically drawn to the girl's face, but the piece draws you to the man, the chandelier, and finally the back wall.
Artistic Qualities/Meaning:
The conceptual focus of this piece is the raw emotion captured in the girl's facial expression. She looks bored, uncomfortable, and just separated from her current position. This reminds the viewer of the struggle of women, especially in today's current climate, with men and boundaries. The mood of this piece is sad, caged, and could even be scared (depending on how you view the story within the work.) The photograph's purpose is to bring attention to the pressing issue of the importance of boundaries, or even sexual assault.
